Barcode printers are peripheral devices that use different methods to print barcode labels, which can be attached to particular products. Direct thermal printers produce black barcodes on paper by using a printhead to generate heat and cause a chemical reaction, while thermal transfer printers use a ribbon that melts a resin substance onto the paper according to a design printed on its surface.
In baggage-handling systems, a barcode label or pouch is an important element of identifying and routing baggage through security screening, sorting, reconciliation and final loading. A small, compact label printer, such as TSC's TDP-225 direct-thermal model, is ideal for churning out a barcode baggage-identification tag at up to 5 inches per second.
These labels can be applied to the exteriors of boxes or directly on the product surfaces. If the products have porous surfaces, such as untreated wood or PVC/steel pipes, a printer with special inks is required to encode the codes on them. This is commonly accomplished via a case coder, which can either print on the labels or directly on the product itself at a rate that's faster than a typical print-and-apply labeler.
Retail businesses rely on these printers to help track and monitor product information, including location and quantity available for delivery. When connected to their sales and inventory management systems, they can also monitor stock on hand and place orders with suppliers.
